This may be my favorite painting I've done so far. After our living in china from 1995 - 1997, Jim returned in 1999 to take photos of the old downtown areas before they were torn down and replaced with white block buildings. This is what Ji'an, Jiangxi Province, looked like at that time. I did this, and several other paintings from Jim's photographs. Oil on canvas. 48" X 48".
This painting from a photo that Jim (husband) took in China pretty much shows the entire kitchen. We managed and thrived. Oil on canvas. 48" X 48.
We were so delighted to have a balcony we could sit on, even if it was a small slice of a thing. We spent many hours out there, looking at the mountains, listening to the "sounds of Ji'an, reading, grading papers, studying Chinese, painting, or just talking.
Medicine Bottle Lanterns
Jim took this photo on his return trip in 1999. I immediately saw the painting potential in the colors and long shadows. Oil on canvas. 24" X 46".
Jim in Ji'an
This is one of the few oil paintings I did while living in China. I cropped Jim in our "stylish" Ji'an living room. We later had slipcovers made for the chairs. We were very comfortable. Oil on gessoed canvas sheet. 16" X 20".
When we lived in China, we went out early each morning to purchase produce for the day from the peasant farmers who brought it up to the campus. I set up this still-life from some of our purchases. Oil on canvas board. 13" X 19"
Another little oil painting I did while living in China. This line, strung across our bedroom, was how we got our laundry dry during the wet spring season.
